HISTORY OF THE NEWTON COUNTY LIBRARY The Newton County, Arkansas Friends of the Library organization was launched at a Valentine party in February of 1991 to support a building program for the Newton County Library that existed in one small room in the back of the local City Hall. Fundraising enabled receipt of $100,000 in federal library building funds.
1994 - The new building was constructed, and
basic equipment and furnishings were installed.
1995 - The Friends assisted with the initial purchase of computer
hardware and software for the library.
1996 - Continued development of resources and
services
1997 - Landscaping project on 1 acre library
grounds that features native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers
for educational as well as for aesthetic purposes.
1998 -
Presentation of cultural and educational programs for
the public and expansion of
computer system. 1999 - Continued development of book and periodical collections, multi-media software, and access to the Internet. |
